Birthday Buddies.

Happy Birthday to Jacob and Nicholas, our birthday buddies!  Jacob is 10 and Nick is 6.  They had a wonderful joint birthday yesterday with lots of cousins and presents.  They are growing up so fast! Wow.

Jacob chose a volcano cake this year.  (Which I have been notified by Nathan that was possibly the worst looking cake I have ever made).  Jacob was happy with it though, so there's that.  Nicholas wanted a cake with a "car driving by some deer at sunset" which is harder to pull off than you think.  It's art, I tell you.  He was very happy with his cake.

The bonus of a volcano cake is the smoking volcano, of course.  Courtesy of some dry ice.
The vapor from the dry ice helped Jacob out with his candles, Nicholas had to blow his out on his own.
When there is extra dry ice...well, there will be bombs.  (Thanks Dan for that idea!)  When we looked it up, there was a cautionary statement about unexploded bombs (of which we had several) and calling a law enforcement official to shoot them and diffuse them.... the scenarios we conjured up about that were pretty funny.
All the guys in anticipation of the explosion.  We had one good one.  And many unexploded ones on the porch this morning that I had to "diffuse" because they looked on the brink of finally going off.  So much fun!

My two boys had a wonderful birthday celebration and I am so thankful for Nicholas and Jacob, who light up our lives!  Happy birthday, boys!

Feast of St. Joseph.

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all my interests and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, so that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.
O St. Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me.
Long ago, when the older boys were little, we chose St. Joseph as patron for our family.  They probably don't really remember making that decision (okay, so I really decided...with their blessing).   We leaned heavily on him when we sold our house.  St. Joe is near and dear our hearts ever since.  Besides, Ken is a carpenter at heart so there is a special connection in that area too.

It was a simple celebration today, pasta and meatball hoagies.  Coke and twizzlers alongside the NCAA games.  Ken originally had a meeting that got rescheduled--St. Joe must have been interceding so that we had the joy of Dad being home.
And in keeping with tradition, cream puffs.  Filled with...whipped cream because its all I had time for.  The cream puff recipe came from the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook and was so very simple.

Happy Feast Day St. Joseph!  Pray for us!

Godspell Jr.

Last fall, Patrick signed up to take a theatre class at a local Catholic school.  (This class was taught by his uncle who is a drama/theatre teacher at a local high school and also attended by two of my nephews and some other homeschool friends of ours.  So much fun!)  He really stepped out of his comfort zone and tried something new.  He loved it!

The play that they put on was Godspell Jr (a shortened version of Godspell).  These few photos below are from  one of the practices, Patrick is in the green.  A friend, Ernie, is in the orange as Jesus.

In this pic, Patrick is the Priest who passes by in the story of The Good Samaritan.
Patrick also had a funny one-liner during the beatitudes where Jesus says, "Did I ever tell you that I used to read feet?  No, its true.  Some people read palms or tree leaves, I read feet.  Look at what this foot says.  It says, 'Rejoice!'" and Patrick says, "No, that says Reebok."

Patrick also had a narration sequence (not shown) that he had to memorize as well as the songs and coordinating dance movements!  They practiced every week from October until the show February 22nd, with a couple breaks for holidays.

These next few pics are from the day of the show (there were two shows in one day).  We really failed on taking very many pictures (mainly because we were trying to keep the little people quiet in the audience!) but everyone really enjoyed the show and Patrick did a great job.

Between the two shows, we managed to get a picture with our actor and Grandma before he ran off to join the others at the cast party.  We're proud of him for trying something new and working hard!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

You know I can't leave a sad post at the top of my blog for long.  So here's a bit of how we are celebrating St. Patrick today.  I didn't really go into this day with a plan...just winging it!
It is a name day after all so that makes this one a little more special.

I found this oxalis at the grocery store this morning and bought one to decorate the table.  My grandmother always had them for St. Pats.  I personally like the purple ones.  They're also known as a "false shamrock."
I went all out on decorations and stuck stuff on a door.  Awesome.  The shamrock craft I did with my kindergarten class last week at co-op and the printable can be found here.

We make a semi-green cake complete with skittle shamrocks and rainbows.  And snakes of course.  (Oh St. Patrick, pray for me and my cake skills.....  haha!)

Elizabeth has graciously demonstrated some of her Irish dance technique for us while we listened to an Irish music radio station on itunes.

Christ be with me
Christ before me
Christ behind me
Christ in me
Christ beneath me
Christ above me
Christ on my right
Christ on my left
Christ where I lie
Christ where I sit
Christ where I arise
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me
Christ in every eye that sees me
Christ in every ear that hears me
Salvation is of the Lord.

Frances Joseph.

Baby Frances Joseph born into heaven on March 10, 2015

Named after St. Frances of Rome (Feastday March 9th) and St. Joseph (Feastday March 19th).  Also known as Frances Joseph Laser Bob depending on who you ask in our family.  :)

This ultrasound was from the week before.  We are all missing our baby even though he/she was so tiny (just 7.5 weeks gestational age).

We found out about this wee one's existence on Valentine's Day and we told the kids on Fat Tuesday.  I'm thankful for the joy they all had in finding out about their new sibling and that they had a couple weeks of joy.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to have seen my baby on ultrasound.  To have heard the heartbeat and watch it flicker.  So many women don't have that experience.  God speaks my love language--He gave me a photo to remember this wee one by and I'm thankful for that.

In the end, we are all thankful for God's never ending grace and goodness.  We will hold little Frances in our hearts until we meet again in Heaven.
